A life insurance lead is a probable customer to whom a life insurance company or life insurance agency can sell its insurance policies. The lead is acquired either by the customer calling the company and communicating his interest in buying a policy or by the life insurance company referring to a database (directory, mailing list etc.) of potential customers. An insurance company sells his policies either directly or through its subsidiary agencies or insurance agents. A life insurance sales lead is one on which the life insurance company can make a probable sale. In certain situations, customers are ready to purchase an insurance policy. They call up an insurance company or agency and tell them about their insurance policy requirements. The life insurance company/agency now has a life insurance lead with them to act upon.

They send an agent over to the house of the individual to make the sales order for the policy. Certain times a life insurance sales lead is handled at the company or agency itself. It is on the basis of such a sales lead that the insurance company can position its resources to make a sale and increase its customer base. An insurance sales lead can be directly acted upon by a life insurance company/agency through one of its sales representatives/agents.

A life insurance lead is a probable customer who could subscribe to the insurance policy on life of a company or agency. He is a potential buyer of one of the policies and is therefore sought after. An insurance lead could be a person who is suitable to purchase a company's life insurance policy, an owner of a vehicle for auto insurance or a senior citizen for Medicare. The lead has to qualify for a policy based on certain pre-determined criteria formulated by that company.

Life Insurance Lead or lead on other types of insurance can be obtained from a variety of sources. The sources could be as general as telephone directories, governmental records, Internet listings etc. Some sources of leads are specific, such as car showrooms in the case of automobile insurance companies or hospital records for medical insurance providers. Not all leads produce a sale as the candidate may already be insured or may simply not be interested. Insurance sales leads can still be considered potential sources of sales for insurance companies and agencies. In fact, many insurance agents are able to carry out their sales activities regularly because of a list of leads with whom they meet regularly.

Life insurance sales leads especially are very easily obtained for the many life insurance providers. It is noticed that the Internet carries comprehensive records of people living in particular states, districts and cities. Since these records are accessible easily, they form an important source of leads for many life insurance companies/agencies. There are online directory listings or people search facilities on the Internet, which could provide a list of possible leads to life insurance companies and their affiliates.
